2007 JCAHO Credentialing and Privileging Standards -
What's Different? What Do You Need to Do? Audio CD
Recorded October 16, 2006

Faculty: Barbara Blackmond, Charlotte Jefferies and Monica Hanslovan

In its latest revision to Standard MS 1.20, the JCAHO appears to give hospitals flexibility in regard to medical staff documents (bylaws, policies, rules & regulations) and amendments! (The comment period for field review on this Standard ends October 27. Let the JCAHO know what an improvement this latest revision is!)

What about the key changes to the credentialing and privileging standards in the 2007 Standards? What will those changes mean in practical terms?

Join Barbara Blackmond, Charlotte Jefferies and Monica Hanslovan of Horty, Springer & Mattern for a discussion of the new Standards and what, if any, steps hospitals should begin taking to comply with them. Specifically, they discuss:

    • Use of ACGME "General Competencies" – just a conceptual framework or a new way to review and evaluate care?
    • "Criteria for new privileges for practitioners who have a record" at your hospital and criteria for those who don't — provisional appointment by any other name?
    • Reappraisal at "reappointment" to "ongoing professional practice evaluation (maintaining privileges) " should be "evidence-based" — what evidence is required?
    • Focused professional practice evaluation — effective date is
January 1, 2008 for initially requested privileges - what can/should you be doing now?
    • Expedited process — only at the Governing Board level?
    • Temporary privileges for an important patient care need (defined time period)
    • Practitioner health process should "consider the applicability" of the ADA and address initiating appropriate actions if the LIP fails to complete a program
    • Leadership standards that affect the medical staff
    • L.D.3.50 — Oversight of contracted services (effective July 1, 2007)
    • Relationships - Board, management, medical staff
