Board Conflicts of Interest
recorded October 22, 2003

Faculty: John Horty & Dan Mulholland

Not a day goes by without some breaking news story about questionable behavior by those entrusted with corporate governance, many of them dealing with conflicts of interest. Enron, Global Crossing, HealthSouth and now the New York Stock Exchange have become poster children for how not to deal with conflicts.

These stories inevitably affected the nonprofit health care sector. Among other things, the JCAHO has announced a new accreditation standard for hospitals that requires them to define what constitutes a conflict of interest and to address conflicts when they arise. And the IRS just last week published a reference guide for tax-exempt organizations which reiterated the need for a comprehensive conflicts of interest policy.

To bring you up-to-date on these recent developments, and to help apply basic principles to today's conflicts, HortySpringer offers this audio CD featuring John Horty and Dan Mulholland.

The following topics are covered:

The fiduciary duty of loyalty
