Disruptive Behavior and the
Joint Commission's Sentinel Event Alert

On July 9 the Joint Commission issued its boldest statement yet regarding disruptive behavior. In its Sentinel Event Alert, the Joint Commission reminded hospitals that they must have an effective Code of Conduct that defines disruptive behavior in place by January 1, 2009. The Sentinel Event Alert also suggests other actions hospitals should take to address disruptive behavior, such as training physician leaders and reporting systems.

The Sentinel Event Alert indicates that the Joint Commission is ready to use its leadership position to take a strong stand against disruptive behavior. It also suggests that surveyors will focus on this area.

MOST members of the health care team conduct themselves in a professional manner. But a very small number can't or won't. And one seriously disruptive individual can totally disrupt an organization and demoralize leaders and other members of the health care team. Worse yet, there is now overwhelming evidence that intimidating and disruptive conduct compromises patient safety and increases the risk of malpractice actions.
