Incorporating ACGME General Competencies into Your Credentialing Process
Recorded June 12, 2008
In the overview of the Credentialing and Privileging standards, the Joint Commission states that the new Standards have been "informed throughout by the six areas of 'General Competencies'" developed by the ACGME and ABMS joint initiative.
The General Competencies have been used by residency programs to evaluate residents for several years. The Joint Commission simply changed the word "resident" in each competency statement to "practitioner." The six competency areas are: Patient Care, Medical/Clinical Knowledge, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism and System-Based Practice.
The Joint Commission states that "[i]ntegrating these concepts into the standards allows the organized medical staff to expand to a more comprehensive evaluation of a practitioner's professional practice." However, there is only one Element of Performance that specifically references the competencies and no Standards that do. So, what is a hospital to do?
Compliance tips in this audio conference include:
- What changes should be made in Medical Staff Bylaws/Credentialing Policies?
- How can you get meaningful peer evaluations that reflect the general competencies and, as important, get you the information that you need regarding applicants for initial appointment and reappointment?
- How can you incorporate the competencies into the peer review process?
- Must you/how can you show ongoing evaluation of practitioners' performance in the six areas?
