PRACTICAL TIPS ON HOW TO COMPLY
WITH THE NEW REQUIREMENTS
AUDIO CONFERENCE SERIES
Effective Performance Improvement Plans
Recorded July 22, 2008
What happens when focused professional practice evaluation reveals a concern about a physician's competence? Too often, in many hospitals' peer review processes, the physician receives a letter stating that a particular case was rated a "4" meaning "standard of care not met." That is inefficient. Worse, it's ineffective. The physician's care doesn't improve. Patients may still be at risk. What's the alternative?
One of the Elements of Performance under FPPE requires that "the measures employed to resolve performance issues are clearly defined." This audio conference will focus on the wide range of options available for Medical Staff leaders to implement to address concerns with a practitioner's performance. These options are based on HortySpringer's progressive steps continuum and range from collegial intervention and educational letters through leaves of absence for retraining. Specifically, our discussion will include:
- How should these measures be defined and where? In the Medical Staff bylaws or Credentials Policy? In the peer review policy? In a separate FPPE policy?
- How can you provide the practitioner under review opportunities for meaningful input into the review and in the development of the performance improvement plan?
- Keys to collegial intervention – preparation, documentation
- Why requirements for additional CME are often ineffective
- What external sources are available to help you evaluate a physician's practice? Who pays for them?
- What factors need to be considered when imposing a requirement that a practitioner be proctored or obtain second opinions?
- What happens if a physician agrees to a leave of absence and doesn't return – or simply moves his/her practice across town?
