Practical Tips for Complying with FPPE
Audio CD/MP3
Recorded July 10, 2008
After analyzing the Standards, you know that focused professional practice evaluation (FPPE) is to be used in two circumstances: 1) for "initially requested privileges" (e.g., new members of the Medical Staff or current members who request additional privileges); and 2) when concerns or issues arise regarding a practitioner's competence or performance.
This audio CD/MP3 addresses the following issues:
- Is proctoring now required for all new members and those granted additional privileges?
- FPPE is a "time-limited period" of review – what is a reasonable time limit?
- Is FPPE for new members and those granted additional privileges the same as provisional appointment?
- The purpose of FPPE for initially requested privileges is to confirm competence suggested by an individual's credentials. How do you confirm competence of a new member to exercise all the "core" privileges in his or her specialty?
- Defining general and specialty-specific triggers for FPPE
- How do OPPE and FPPE relate?
- One of the Elements of Performance under FPPE requires the Medical Staff to develop "criteria to be used for evaluating the performance of practitioners when issues affecting the provision of safe, high quality patient care are identified." What criteria are the Joint Commission looking for?
- When does it make sense to seek external peer review?
- Is a separate FPPE policy necessary?
- What bylaws changes are required?
