	Get ready! Here they come! Sometime in September, CMS will be sending a survey to 500 hospitals around the country, asking for detailed information about every financial relationship those hospitals have with physicians. See the following link for more details: http://www.cms.hhs.gov/PhysicianSelfReferral/05a_Disclosure.asp This is an outgrowth of the requirement in last year's Deficit Reduction Act directing CMS to study financial relationships between specialty hospitals and their physician owners. Only now, the survey will be conducted across the board. If you are one of the lucky 500 and have your act together, it should be no problem. If not, it could be a nightmare! Among other things, hospitals that do not respond fully within the 45-day time limit will be subject to civil money penalties of $10,000 per day for each day they are late. And, if CMS has reason to believe that any of your contracts violate the law, it may refer the matter to the OIG or even the Department of Justice! Even if your hospital is not selected for the survey, it still makes sense to get a handle on your physician contracts.
