Courts, accrediting entities, and physician commentators have all recognized the link between professional behavior and patient safety.

Physician leaders should develop policies that give them the tools to effectively and efficiently address unprofessional behavior before it affects patient safety.

  • Defining “unprofessional conduct”;
  • Following up with individuals who file a report;
  • Using a triage process to promptly address less significant concerns;
  • Coordinating efforts with the practitioner’s employer;

Learning Objectives
