Introduction

May Grand Rounds – The Expanding Role of Advanced Practice Providers in Hospitals: Has the Pandemic Opened the Floodgates?

May 3, 2022 - 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm (ET)

In many states, Advanced Practice Providers, such as Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants, had their scope of practice expanded before the COVID-19 pandemic.  This expansion included explicit permission to practice independently after a designated period of supervision and to perform certain procedures that weren’t previously in their scope of practice.  When the pandemic hit, it laid bare the importance of and the need for Advanced Practice Providers in providing care in a hospital setting. Accordingly, federal and state entities waived several restrictions on the practices of Advanced Practice Providers to ensure that COVID patients (and other patients) received the care they needed.

During this audio conference, we will address the expanding role of Advanced Practice Providers, both through the lens of state scope of practice laws and federal and state waivers put into effect because of the COVID-19 pandemic.  We will also discuss methods to credential and privilege Advanced Practice Providers who are seeking to practice consistent with their expanding roles.  Finally, we will cover several ancillary topics on Advanced Practice Providers, including those related to EMTALA and liability.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Understand how federal and state governments have expanded the role of Advanced Practice Providers recently.
  • Articulate strategies for credentialing and privileging Advanced Practice Providers for hospital practice considering their expanded roles.
  • Understand the forces giving rise to a need for Advanced Practice Providers to deliver an increasing amount of care in a hospital setting.
